Back Tee Happenings

Jerry Smith PGA Tour Champions Success

Jerry Smith has become a fixture on the PGA Tour Champions with a run of consistent success dating back to the beginning of the 2015 season when he first became eligible as an exempt player.  Jerry's career earnings are now closing in on the $2.0 million mark with nine top ten finishes to go along with his one tournament win which came in the Encompass Championship just outside of Chicago.  Jerry continues to work with Back Tee Sports when his schedule allows which these days is not nearly often enough.  Best wishes to Smitty as his career continues on the PGA Tour Champions.

Harmon Southwest Senior Champion Again

Greg Harmon recently claimed his second consecutive victory in the Southwest Senior Section Championship held at Mesa Country Club in Mesa, Arizona.  After opening the tournament with a 72 Greg fired his age on day two with a sizzling round of 65 which allowed him to finish two shots clear of the field.  With the win Greg breaks his own record as the oldest champion in the history of the Southwest Section and at the conclusion of play his comment was the same as the year before, "I thought I was done winning golf tournaments."   Keep on winning Harmy!

Cornell Named Nebraska Golf Professional of the Year

Mike Cornell was named Nebraska Golf Professional of the Year for 2015 which represents the highest honor you can receive at the section level.  This award is based on a person's overall performance as a PGA golf professional, including their leadership qualities as well as their service and promotion of the game of golf.  Mike adds this to his lengthy resume which already included being named as the Nebraska Teacher of the Year on six different occasions.  Congratulations to Mike on the well deserved honor.

McMillian's Team on Top at Thomas Pro-Am

At the recent Tommy Thomas Pro-Am held at the Sewailo Golf Club just outside of Tucson, Jeff McMillian and his team finished on top of the final leaderboard.  Individually, Jeff posted three consecutive scores of 65 that included 23 birdies over the 54 holes and in the team competition Jeff's group rallied from behind with the best score on the last day to finish three shots clear of the field.  In looking forward to defending his team's title Jeff has challenged the rest of the Back Tee Sports staff to put together a team for next year's Thomas event.

Curt Schnell and Okoboji View

For the past several years Curt Schnell has been the owner of an 18 hole public golf course tucked away in the Northwest Corner of Iowa called Okoboji View.  Curt does everything from giving lessons to mowing fairways to cooking hamburgers so it should come as no surprise that he also holds the course record with a 9 under par round of 61.  If you ever find yourself in the area stop by for a shot at his course record and if that doesn't work out ask Curt to serve you one of the warm chocolate chip cookies he claims are the best in the business.

Charity Events

It's been almost a decade since Back Tee Sports got involved with The Boys & Girls Clubs of America with the relationship initially starting at an event in the Denver area before expanding to include an event in Houston and between the two locations the amount of money raised has now exceeded the $5.0 million mark.  In addition Back Tee Sports will continue their relationship with NCCER in the year ahead with two more charity events to support their 'Build Your Future' initiative which highlights the industry need to promote careers in construction and help eliminate workforce shortages.
