Jerry Smith Champions Tour Debut

Jerry Smith qualified for exempt status on the Champions Tour this past season and he capitalized on that opportunity in a big way.  After getting off to a solid start in his first few events Jerry turned it up a notch in early July at the Encompass Championship outside of Chicago. Going wire to wire with the lead Jerry held off some of golf's biggest names to capture a win in just his 12th career start.  Jerry would go on to finish with earnings of $652,365 placing him 28th on the final Champions Tour money list.  Congratulations Smitty and  continued success going forward.

Harmon Wins Southwest Senior Section Championship

Greg Harmon claimed victory recently in the Southwest Senior Section Championship played at Firerock Country Club in Fountain Hills, AZ.   After opening the tournament with a 73 Harmon trailed the leaders by four shots but Greg came storming back with a scorching round of 66 to finish clear of the field by two shots.  With the victory Greg becomes the oldest winner in the history of the Southwest Section and after the win he commented, "I thought I was done winning golf tournaments."  Congratulations to Mr. Harmon!!

Cornell Named Nebraska Golf Professional of the Year

The Nebraska Section of the PGA held their annual awards banquet recently and Mike Cornell was named as the Nebraska Section Golfer Professional of the Year.  This award represents the highest honor you can receive at the section level and is based on overall performance as a PGA golf professional, including leadership, service and promotion of the game.  Mike can add this to his lengthy resume which already includes being named as the Nebraska Teacher of the Year on six different occasions.

McMillian, Schnell at Oxford Golf Pro-Am

Oxford Golf hosts several pro-am events each year with Jeff McMillian & Curt Schnell being frequent participants in their player friendly tournaments.  During a recent Oxford Golf event in Las Vegas McMillian's group ended up with the low score out of 50 plus teams and Schnell's group was not far behind finishing in third place.  Curt vows to reverse the results next time around and he would also like everyone to know that his team has finished on top on multiple occasions in the past.

Curt Schnell and Okoboji View

For the past several years Curt Schnell has been the owner of Okoboji View which is an 18 hole public golf course in the Northwest corner of Iowa.  Curt does it all at Okoboji View from mowing fairways to cooking burgers to giving lessons so it should come as no surprise that he is also the course record holder with a 9-under par round of 61.  If you ever find yourself in the area stop by for a shot at Curt's record and if that doesn't work out maybe Curt will serve you one of the warm chocolate chip cookies that he claims to be the best in the business!

Charity Events

This will be the eighth consecutive year Back Tee Sports has been involved with The Boys & Girls Clubs of America initially starting with an event in the Denver area and now expanding to include an event in the greater Houston area as well.   Last year alone these two events combined to raise nearly $1mm for the benefit of the organization.  In addition Back Tee Sports will host two charity events in the year ahead for NCCER supporting their 'Build Your Future' initiative which highlights the industry need to promote construction careers and eliminate workforce shortages.
